Some people choose not to use their health insurance coverage on a regular basis because they want to save it for the rainy days – when they get sick and they need it the most.
We’ve all heard the line “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” That can’t be more true. Taking care of yourself and seeing your doctor on a regular basis for preventative care, and to talk about things that you are truly concerned about, is money well spent. Here are a few more suggestions that you can follow when managing your health.
1. Go for regular checkups
Visit your doctor for regular checkups instead of waiting until you get sick. Many policies include preventative care benefits such as annual exams, dental checkups and cleaning, and vaccines.
2. Know your symptoms and tell your doctor about them
Some insurance companies do not want to pay for any unnecessary test and may not approve the request if there is no evidence that you need testing. Knowing your symptoms can help the doctor in analyzing your situation and narrowing down the options for the lab tests that you need, making it easier to get approval.
3. Don’t rely on your doctor to keep you healthy
Doctors are busy people. You know that as well as we do. Something that you may not know is it’s not their job to keep you healthy – that’s your job. They are there to answer your questions and run tests if necessary, but it’s your job to make healthy choices in life such as the food you eat, the habits you keep, and the activities and exercise you choose to do.
4. Find a doctor that you like
If you are not happy with your current doctor for any reason, ask to see a different one. maybe they don’t answer your questions in a way you understand, maybe they are impersonal, or maybe it’s something that you can’t put into words. Whatever the reason may be, don’t be afraid to look for a new one. Ask your family and friends who they see and if they like them. While many health insurance programs will limit the healthcare organizations you can go to, most all of them have many doctors to choose from.
