New to Camping in an RV? Use These Tips
Seasoned RV campers know that RV camping can be great … when you plan well. There are a lot of elements that go into this type of camping, and RVs (or motorhomes) themselves are an amalgamation of several complex systems. They are vehicles, yes, but they are also mini homes. This means that in addition to purchasing and caring for the actual motorhome itself, you also need to purchase and care for many additional items and elements that will come into play as you drive, live in, and use your RV.
This brings us to the next important point: Make sure you do your research and shop around when you purchase your first RV. This is an expensive purchase, and you’ll want to take your time purchasing the right vehicle. There are three classes of motorhomes that you should be aware of. First, there are Class A motorhomes. These are the largest of the bunch, and they can sleep up to eight people. You might have seen them on the road and thought they looked as big as buses (which they can be!).
The next class of motorhomes is class B. Contrary to what you might think, these are not actually the next size down, but the smallest of all three motorhome classes. Many people think these look more like vans, and indeed, they are much smaller than class A motorhomes — although they come in several sizes. Finally, there are class B motorhomes. Class B motorhomes are sized in between class A and class C motorhomes, but they can fit as many as eight people just like class A motorhomes. The main difference is that these motorhomes are built on the chassis of a truck and are, therefore, quite a bit smaller than class A motorhomes. You’ll know it’s a class C motorhome if you see an overhang from of the living area on top of the driving cab. Generally, this will be storage or a sleeping space.
If you’re looking to make an inexpensive purchase of a motorhome as you venture into RV camping, consider a used vehicle. There are many excellent used motorhomes on the market, and you are bound to find exactly what you’re looking for in terms of features and amenities. The one thing to make sure that you always do — no matter whether your motorhome is used or new, big or small, decked out or bare-bones — is to purchase insurance for your motorhome.
Like any other large investment, it’s wise to make sure that you have full coverage for your motorhome in the event of unexpected damage or a liability case where someone gets hurt.
